In order to play an audio file, a browser usually calls a viewer or player, which may be either a helper application or a plug-in. Each type of audio file has the appropriate application associated with it. You can find out which application your browser uses for WAV files.
For example
- in Netscape: check the "Edit" -> "Preferences" -> "Navigator" -> "Applications" menu.

Windows
Under the Windows operating system, the default file format for audio files is WAV. Any standard application will be able to play them; for instance, the CD Player, Sound Recorder, Windows Media Player or most MP3 players (such as WinAmp). On a PC with your browser properly configured, you should hear the words when you click on them.
- With Internet Explorer: IE seems to use the Windows default assignment of a file type to an application. To find out what it is, go to the menu:
"Start" -> "Settings" -> "Folder Options" -> "File Types"
For example

- A plug-in: To see the list of plug-ins installed, type "about:plugins" in the browser's Location field.
- A helper application: See the Preferences menu, as described above.
Unix/Linux
Many applications or programs, such as KDE KMedia or Play, are able to play WAV format files. Just select a valid media player for your environment on your browser's Preferences menu.
For example

Apple
The default format for audio files on a Macintosh is AIFF, but many Mac applications, such as QuickTime, are now able to play WAV files. You will have to configure your browser so that it calls the right application in your environment. Fill in the information required on your browser's Preferences menu, as described above.
